Stahhr “Mother Nature with a Molotov: Molotov Season review

Female Emcees are far and few between in the hip hop world. Let me rephrase that: good female emcees are far and few between in the hip hop world. Negative perceptions of females in hip hop run rampant and plague the culture. However, when I stumbled across rising star staHHr, I realized there was hope after all.  staHHr’s “Mother Nature with a Molotov: Molotov Season” album was a huge and appreciated surprise. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard an album I would deem a classic, but even longer since I’ve heard one from a female.

• CROWN – FAVORITE BAR: “FRESH DRESSED LIKE A MILLION BUCKS-MANICURE, PEDICURE, WIT A BRAND NEW CUT”. staHHr starts the album with a track laced with a bit of old school nostalgia to it. Astronote does an excellent job with the production and showcases just how flawless staHHr’s flow and cadence is. Even though this is my first time hearing staHHr spit, she clearly shows she has what it takes.

• UNBREAKABLE – FAVORITE BAR: “DANA DANE FLOW/PLAIN JANE KNOW/PUNKY BREWSTER WITH COLORFUL MAINFRAME GLOW”.This track is a perfect mix of hip hop and neo soul. I could ride all night to this track just on the smoothness of the hook alone. This track is more than single worthy; it needs a video. Ironically, her delivery of the lyrics is so hard as if she’s battling someone, which is juxtaposition to the elegance of the production done by Dj Dug Boogie.

• COSMIK LUV – FAVORITE BAR: “WE EACH FOUND THE MISSING PUZZLE PIECE, AIN’T EVEN GOT TO SPEAK/CONNECT IS THAT DEEP”.  Listening to this track answered two questions I had about her album: Will she have a love song and will it be cheesy? The answers: yes and no. Lex Boogie from the Bronx laces this track with the heat. I love how staHHr uses herbal analogies dealing with their love. The love that she shows on this track is “unconditional without any flaws“.

Overall, this is the one of the best albums I’ve reviewed this year. Forget gender, forget hype; this album is a winner by a landslide. It was such a refreshing surprise to see that she lived up to rumors of having “old school precision with new school vision”.  The album is well-balanced with lyrical, love and conscience tracks. staHHr has given me hope for hip hop – male or female.
