Since the breakup of Queens, New York rap duo Organized Konfusion, Pharoahe Monch has enjoyed a prolific solo career that unintentionally overshadowed the traversals of his former partner, Prince Po who has etched a few highly acclaimed solo outings for himself. Po has found a new kindred spirit in Oh No, the sole producer of Po’s latest effort, Animal Serum.
Like Po, Oh No has etched quite a career for himself with numerous acclaimed instrumental albums, successful collaborations with The Alchemist under the name Gangrene and countless production credits to his name yet will always be instantly recognized somewhat unfairly as the little brother of revered producer, Madlib. The instant camaraderie coupled with the intense energy each brings to each project through beats and rhymes, respectively, makes Animal Serum a high-octane experience from start to finish. No matter the subject matter, every track personifies all things head-nodding.
Po provides a quick Organized Konfusion fix with the lead single and most frenetic song on Animal Serum, “Smash” which features Pharoahe Monch as well as the honorary third OK member, O.C.
Other standouts include the uplifting, bass heavy “Keep Reachin,’” the choppy, keys-driven “Toxic,” where Oh No joins Po on vocals and the closing track, “Giveitup.”
Pharoahe Monch’s current release, PTSD has been highly anticipated and will more than likely overshadow Prince Po yet again. But Animal Serum should not be ignored in the least bit…especially by those don’t mind a little neck pain after effects from a good rap album.
