In an April 2010 interview, Hall of Fame player John Havlicek said that “the best ball-handler of all time was Pete Maravich“. So for a rapper to compare their self to “Pistol Pete”, they would be stating that they’re the best mic handler in the game. Paper Nolassnaym has taken this challenge with his new EP titled “Pistol Pete”. He partners with producer, Luke Crowder, from S.W.A.T. Team productions and create a particular sound that paves the way for the EP.
After a quick intro reminding us of who Pistol Pete was, they start the EP off with “Razzle Dazzle“. After hearing a smooth guitar leading us into Paper’s verse, he starts off giving us a top notch bar about his team “packing pistols like pete“. He raps about the street code, yet shows his street smarts and vision to excel like Roc-A-Fella Records. Speaking about Roc-A-Fella, I also admire the fact that he gave Memphis Bleek a shout out. People usually don’t give him his respect that he deserves. I have to crown Paper with the most wise weed bar that I’ve ever heard with “Playing God with the green, trying to rapture all the trees“. The beat switch up on the second verse adds a southern flavor to this playa vibe track.
With “Behind The Back“, Paper starts off the track delivering some lines about being about his money and business. He also gives a nice pun with “Brown Sugar in my city of D’Angelos/We all trying to get a piece of the Devil’s pie“. It proves that Paper has a great taste in music and is very creative. “Winner’s Circle” is a nice groovy track to end the EP with. I will say that I would’ve liked to hear more rapping and less of the hook and bridges.
Overall, this is a really solid project. Paper puts you in mind of a younger and more hungrier version of Curren$y. Paper’s connection with Luke really comes out well on the project and I would love to hear more from them together. One thing that I respect about Paper is how he shows love for those who inspire him from Jay-Z to Master P. As he continues to make projects like this, he can be one of the mic handlers of this generation.
