What do you get when you get a artist that brings attractive lyrics of life and survival within the streets? You get Charmingly Ghetto. Charmingly Ghetto dropped his “Study A’broad the international mixtape” last week. What is so unique about this project is that he uses a different producer from different areas of the world. Thus, the play on words of the “international” reference. This mixtape is a true gem. Hip hop has been missing this for so long…mixtapes that sound like hip hop. The idea behind this mixtape is just genius!
- 2 The Essence (ft. Colo): “Feeling 38 special, they ain’t quite revolved.” “They wondering how the flow survived the apocalypse.” This track is produced by DTunez and Smooth King Boehm repping Germany. Charmingly Ghetto really brings the essence of hip hop on this track. It is so nice how he mixes spirituality within his track, yet doesn’t sound too preachy. Colo does a great job with his verse. This is my favorite track off of the mixtape. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!
- I.C.G. (It’s Charmingly Ghetto): “I’ve been had the drive, the key just got stuck in the ignition.” “Never had a chance to eat corn, life got them stuck in a maze.” This track is produced by Cypria repping the United kingdom. This track is a great introduction to who Charmingly Ghetto is and what he is about. That “corn maze” bar is one of the best bars I’ve heard this year. He has fun when he takes the track back on the second verse.
- Pursuit of Happyness (Nice to Meet U): “I talk slick like officials from BP/My toxic spit got them looking for EP’s.” This track is produced by The Enovator repping New Zealand. This is one of my favorite beats off of the mixtape. It has a soulful, yet errie feel to it. I like the different angle that Chamingly Ghetto used on making this track. I also like how my favorite bar from the track has a double entendre (EP meaning “cds” and EP “enviromental protectors” from his “toxic” that he spits). Chamingly Ghetto decribes himself as the “92 Nas” on this track. I think I would have to agree. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!
- Alone in the World (ft. R.E.K.S.): “Spilt it with the SIBS/Give more than I take/Share more than i make/Die so i can live.” This track is produced by Introspective Minds repping the United States. I love the production on this track. It’s so dark, but it’s so funky. The beat goes with the theme of the track. This is probaly one of my favorite R.E.K.S. verses. This track has a Wu-Tang feel to it. The only thing that i can say bad about this track is the length. This track needed one more verse. Other than that, it is a banger.
- Follow Me (ft. Thee Invisibles’ Ralphie O’Hare): “They have been waiting for a vibe like this/Since Jigga put down the spoon in 96.” This track was produced by Jc_Beatzz repping Luxembourg via Spain. I don’t know if it’s the fact that he spoke about Jay-Z in the first verse, but this track reminds me of all the hot tracks from Resaonable Doubt. The beat and the lyrics are so on point. I don’t use the word “crooner” much, because I really don’t know people who can do it well. However, Ralphie O’ Hare is one of the best crooner’s I’ve heard. He really makes this track on the hook and at the end. This is also one of my favorites off of the mixtape. This is a REPEAT OFFENDER!
- Hollywood (ft. K. Sparks): “On the block acting hard when they should be reading a book/Never mislead with the hook.” This track was produced by Pajozo repping Sweden. Pajozo has such a unique and distinct sound. His style meshes well with Charmingly Ghetto and K. Sparks. These two emcees sound so well together. This track has could be a single. It would also be make a great video. This track is a REPEAT OFFENDER!
Overall, I have to go back to his Nas comparrison. I have to say that I agree. This mixtape is just as good as illmatic and is one of the best mixtapes I’ve heard this year. Well, this is one of the best hip hop projects I’ve heard all year. Check out the tracklist, stream, and download link below.
