Track Review: ATG “Tshirt and Buddens Freestyle”

I received this track along with a note saying “Go ahead and be harsh, I can take it.” I’m gonna cut right to the chase. Either this dude was setting me up to feed him compliments by pretending he didn’t think he was dope or dude is delusional and has no idea how dope he is. If you’re a little murky on what I’m getting at, I’ll clear it up for you. This dude is fucking dope!

When I clicked the link I saw that it was labeled a freestyle and my eyes instantly went to the words “Lil B.” My interest was immediately gone as I thought it was going to be another instance of me having to tell some up-and-coming MC how shitty he is, because, guys…if Lil B is your inspiration, good luck to you, but don’t send me your music unless you want me to verbally poop all over your track. Thank you, Based God, for not having ATG share any similarities with Lil B in the ways of rhyme scheme or style. Dude is raw as hell and clearly takes lyricism seriously. As far as ATG’s style, he reminds me a bit of Reef The Lost Cauze on Fight Music. I also get a glimpse of Vakill or even Reks. He commands the beat like Ivan Drago whooping the shit out of Apollo Creed.  No fucking mercy.

Let me also say I enjoyed the video. I dug the amateur one-shot approach he took. No bullshit effects. No hot chicks. No weed sacks. Just an MC going the fuck off in what seems like his preparation to go jack somebody. Coolest part about it is dude is getting ready to jack them with a fucking butcher knife old school slasher film style. Props on that.

I can honestly say, so far, this might be the best track I’ve been sent. This is the kind of music I look forward to receiving; unsigned rappers who are clearly on the path to stomping a hole in the game. Listening to it, I couldn’t help but repeatedly bob my head. Hard. ATG’s passion is undeniable and he’s putting his all into this track.  I can’t wait to hear the rest of his mixtape. If it’s anything like this track, with a bit of polishing, this dude is gonna be a problem.

So what can I say that’s bad about it? Hmmm…let me think. All I could come up with was the fact that, at minute 1:18, he spelled “speaker” wrong. Sorry. Had to do it.

Lastly, I have to point out that this cat is so nice I actually took the time to listen to his other tracks, which led me to his song “This is Halloween.” Again, pretty damn dope. This one sees him throwing us some horror movie themed verses and I love how he mixed in the Nightmare Before Christmas sample. Point is it’s clear he didn’t just luck up with one dope track. This guy is the real deal.

“Sicker than Kanye posing as Jesus. If he’s hip hop then ole girl from Precious must be bulimic. I don’t believe it.”  Even though I like ‘Ye, that line was ill.
