3L$, short for 3uburbanlife$tyle, is a hip hop collective originating from Austell, Georgia. Founded in 2010, the collective boasts ten members with varying talents that involve MCing, producing, and artistry. But according to the members, 3L$ isn’t just a collective of talented young individuals; it’s a lifestyle that anyone can live regardless of their social ranking. 3L$’s debut mixtape entitled BOUTTIME“is sponsored by Novus Imperium (a rather interesting clothing company). Clocking in at a little over 28 minutes, this 11-track mixtape kicks off with a short hazy instrumental and picks up with the second track, “Chapter 1” with Hassan of 3L$ going in on some energetic production that complements his flow very well. Perhaps my absolute favorite track on this mixtape is track three, “rambo”. This track has some great production from in-house producer BitoyBeatz with plenty of trap-inspired bass and trippy instrumentals layered in which pleasantly stand out. XAVIERLEE’s laid back flow on “rambo” works well with Bitoy’s production and my favorite line of his has to be when he says, “I say fuck the world with them Durex condoms.”
Following “rambo” is another short instrumental titled “break time”, which reminds me exactly of how an intermission feels like. After this the mixtape picks up again with the track “Go In” with Dolo Haze spitting on some production that has similar energy to the track “Chapter 1”. Track six, with Hassan back on the mic, is titled “Benjamins” and this track is another one of my faves on this mixtape. There’s some more trap-inspired bass in the production with a bit of a slow atmospheric tempo provided making this track a relaxing one. And I enjoy Hassan’s hook, “I got Benjamins in my pocket.” Who wouldn’t want some Benjamins in their pockets?
I’m a big fan of samples used in hip-hop (especially if they are used well) and I believe track seven, “thir13en” does just that. This track features great production by KYDD and sampling of Biggie Smalls’s classic “Party and Bullshit”. The 3L$ MC introduced on this track is Kon$ept and I enjoyed the narrative he provided regarding his cannabis high, which makes the Biggie sample make even more sense. You can never go wrong with production provided from Flying Lotus, and track nine “ongoing” proves it again. XAVIERLEE hops on this track and provides more of his comedic banter with some more memorable lines like, “Never gave a fuck; bust a nut on your vinyl.” “ongoing” is another of my faves.
Track nine, “NewBugattiInFlorida”, is a very danceable mash up track by DJ HAWTHORNE with a number of artists featured, including Rick Ross. Track 10, “babysteps” featuring MAX fuego and Alex Ruby, is a slow and hazy jazz-inspired track which can definitely put you in the mood under the right influence. Finishing off the mixtape is the instrumental “LE END”, which is a good conclusion to this debut by 3L$
I enjoyed BOUTTIME more than I thought I would and, after this solid debut, I’m looking forward to seeing what 3L$ does next.
