DEHH: ICYMI Week 1

March 19, 2018 by Terrence Sage Leave a Comment

In this first week of Dead End Hip-Hop: In Case You Missed It, we’ll be going over all things hip-hop and DEHH related to catch you up on everything you need to know to be caught up for the new week.

(For this post it’ll be some of the bigger releases and announcements for February before we start getting into March in later installments)

  • On (2/9/18) Friday, we saw the release of 2 Chainz EP “The Play Don’t Care Who Makes It” and the Black Panther Soundtrack curated by TDE.

  • On an archived episode of “Abstract Radio” via Beats 1, Q-Tip let free an unreleased tune featuring Kendrick Lamar. “Want U 2 Want” appears at the 1:42:00 mark of the episode.

  • The ever elusive Frank Ocean blessed the lonely hearts with his version of Moon River, the song originating from Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It’s slow, sweet, and it’s more Frank Ocean in the world so take it and run with it because you never know if it’ll be another three months or years with him.

  • Nipsey Hussle’s newest album “Victory Lap” is now out everywhere! 16 tracks of solid West Coast Rap with a stacked list of solid features, give this new album a spin as we head into the weekend.

  • SOB x RBE delivered a smashing, hard-hitting rap album that keeps the light on the group that was featured on one of the tracks on the Black Panther Album and continues to prove that West Coast Rap has a lot of content worthy of our ears.

  • It’s been quite a long time for a new share of Mick Jenkins music for fans of the Chicago Rapper. Other than his album, “The Healing Component” that released in 2016, Jenkins has tided over fans with a project in the line of a mixtape series “Or More; The Anxious” that released late last year. On 2/24/18 “Or More; The Frustration” is the next in line for the series and standing at nine tracks should tide everyone over for whatever Jenkins comes up with next.

Check Out “RAF” by A$AP Rocky Ft. Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Frank Ocean, and Quavo

May 16, 2017 by B Brusberg Leave a Comment

If you love something why don’t you marry it? Because marriage is an endeavor. A$AP Rocky loves fashion, and specifically he has an admiration for the work of designer Raf Simons. A$AP Rocky expressed his admiration for Simon’s work in the fashion community by releasing a new song entitled “RAF” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Frank Ocean, and Quavo. That’s quite a lineup. “RAF” premiered on episode 006 of Frank Ocean’s blonded RADIO, his Beats 1 radio show under Apple Music. Two versions of the track are available in the above video. You can listen but don’t touch his Raf.

I know very little about fashion, which is odd because my ancestors were Belgian. I tend to wear gray hoodies, sweats, and Asics in public. You’re allowed to laugh. One could argue this song could be a marketing tool for Raf Simons’s clothing, but I feel that A$AP Rocky did this song strictly as a tribute based on his endearing appreciation of fashion. I like the idea of this song because fashion is clearly one of A$AP Rocky’s interests and he’s enjoying himself. It’s a fairly mellow tune that doesn’t get in your face and the message is pretty easy to comprehend: Don’t touch his Raf. The featured artists feel right at home on this track and convey a similar message. What’s exciting to think about is if future artists will debut music on Frank Ocean’s show. This prospect could enhance Ocean’s audience and it might be a beneficial play for Apple and artists.

Raheem DeVaugn – Thinkin’ Bout You [Remix]

January 10, 2013 by Dead End Hip Hop Leave a Comment

Another remix from Raheem DeVaughn that has him this time going over Frank Ocean’s hit. I hope this is a sign he’s working on a new project. Raheem owns the R&B game when it comes to taking other artists songs and totally flipping them into something new and original and sometimes better.

Frank Ocean – Wiseman

Apparently this is supposed to be on Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained movie soundtrack but it got cut. So Frankie Ocean decided to take matters into his own hands and drop this fire through his Tumblr account.

Frank Ocean Leaks Lost Cut From ‘Django Unchained’ Soundtrack

December 23, 2012 by Dead End Hip Hop Leave a Comment

While the Quentin Tarantino-directed slavery western “Django Unchained” is set to release on Christmas Day, it seems like Frank Ocean’s contribution to the film was left on the cutting room floor.

He uploaded the twangy, reverb-heavy song on his personal Tumblr, with “django was ill without it.” as the caption.

Ocean also posted a snapshot of the lyrics, so those who dig it can kuumbaaya to the song in real-time.

That being said, I actually had the chance to attend a press screening for the film this past Tuesday. The film as a whole is solid, although Tarantino goes too far in the violence department. But don’t take my word for it; see it for yourself!

The soundtrack, which is available for purchase, was varied and enjoyable, featuring the likes of Western stalwarts like Ennio Morricone (who scored the “Man With No Name” trilogy) as well as a crazy Tupac-James Brown redux and tracks from Rick Ross and John Legend.

But this Frank Ocean track was not in the film.
