A key figure in the careers of 50 Cent, N.O.R.E., Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and more, it has confirmed that Chris Lighty has died from an apparent suicide. According to Hip Hop DX, the police reports state that Chris Lighty had a difficult year as a music executive, prompting him to take his own life.
“The New York Daily News confirms that Lighty was found dead at his apartment in Bronx, New York this morning at 11:30 am EST. He was shot in the head in what arriving officers reported was self-inflicted. Police officials also told the newspaper that Lighty, 44 years old, was newly divorced and owed the IRS several million dollars.” – HHDX
Lighty worked with Russell Simmons as part of Russell Management and Def Jam and most recently Lyor Cohen with Brand Asset Group. It was first reported on Twitter but, unfortunately, we are unable to rely on Twitter as a true source of news in these situations so we had to wait until there was solid info.
Dead End Hip Hop extends our condolences to Chris Lighty’s family, friends, and Violator.
