After hearing 2mindz’s production on Shine’s “No Coasters” and his production from That Kid Era’s “illy“, I knew he would be a prominent producer in 2014. This year, he’s starting off early with a joint project with Ock Milly entitled The New King. Right from the start, these two show their perfect chemistry together with “King”. Ock Milly lives up to the track title by showing he is “seasoned like soul food” on this soulful track provided by 2mindz. He “rocks out like kidney stones” and gives some bars that could turn some heads. I also give him props for the Living Single reference. Ock Milly does well balancing the features. Trading life changing bars with K.Y. on “Words From The Heart” (which is one of my favorite tracks) shows Ock Milly’s sensitive side as he gives some powerful imagery. 2mindz sample from Jill Scott’s “Golden” for “M.M.B.” is creative and trippy and Db’oso adds some flare with his verse on the track as well. “Cash Money Boyz” has single/radio potential and mass appeal. On “The Growth”, Ock Milly lets us know his goal is to be played in Lebron James’s Dre Beats during the shooter round. This is indicating that he wants a king to recognize another one.
The 2mindz and Ock Milly connection is similar to a Rick Ross and Justice League connection. Neither the beats nor the bars outshined each other. They compliment each other well. Ock Milly has earned a spot on my radar from this point on. He delivers showing that he is a well rounded artist, while keeping it fly. 2mindz gives us that classic hip hop feel with his production, while keeping it sounding relevant. This Michigan and New Jersey team shows that hip hop goes beyond regional bounds. At the end of the day, this was a great listen. It’s a new year for this new king and I want to see how the game is going to be under his rule.
