So my man, Niles aka Tribe One, hit me up recently with news of a recent release he’s involved in. It’s called Fun Razor and it involves him as well as other nerdcore MCs Adam WarRock, Jesse Dangerously and Mikal kHill. This is a benefit compilation to help fund their upcoming No Friends tour (scroll to the bottom for a complete list of cities and dates). Now, this is the kinda shit that I’m all about. MCs who use their skill to fund their own shit in the most DIY way possible. And that’s through releasing music. They could have just put together a nice compilation of previously released material, but how innovative is that? Instead, they decided to take their favorite tracks from each other and put their own spin on them rhyme-wise.
To be honest, before listening to this, I was only familiar with Tribe One (through personal affiliation and his other group, The Remnant) and Adam WarRock (because I got him confused with Adam Warlock…true story…sorry). But after this, I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on the rest of these dudes. They’re all great MCs and, best of all, very different from each other. Sure, they may cover some of the same areas, but none of them can be mistaken for one of the other four.
I’ll admit I’m not a huge expert on the nerdcore genre, but I’ll say that a lot of what I’ve heard was not appealing to me. That sentiment doesn’t hold up with this mixtape. I definitely enjoy all of these guys far more than people like MC Frontalot, Optimus Rhyme or MC Chris (who I can’t stand). Unlike the aforementioned rappers, these guys actually keep my attention and rap in a way that doesn’t make me want to stick squirrel dicks in my ears. Each MC brings their own style to the table, which keeps a mixtape like this from getting stale. Not only that, lucky for the listener, each of these guys has different tastes in production so the mixtape sounds nicely varied. And when it comes to rhymes, these guys are showing that nerds can definitely spit about shit other than video games and Star Wars. You get your spitterific shit (Adam WarRock’s “Ultraman”), your deep shit (Jesse Dangerously’s “Coming Out Wrong”), your braggadocios funny shit (Mikal kHill’s “Awwwwwwwww Fuck”) and even your “fuck your gangsta shit, I’m a dork” shit (Tribe One’s “Nerd Cred”).
I don’t want to box this in, but I’ll say this definitely appeals more to the underground “backpacker” type than anyone else. Not to say it would completely put off your average fan of more accessible hip hop; I’m just saying that I think fans of older Def Jux or Anticon style hip hop would get a lot more enjoyment out of this than someone with a 2Chainz tattoo. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see them do, at least, one posse cut for the mixtape. It’d be really fresh to hear how these guys play off each other all on one track. But, shit, maybe they’ll do that live when you go see them! Hint hint, fellas…
Click here to purchase the mixtape. Trust me, it’s a very well spent $10. Help support indie hip hop. Help these guys get to your city. And when they do get there, be sure to go out and see them live. I’m definitely planning on being in attendance on 9/12.
