Mack Scott: “Summer Was Crazy” [Album Review]

November 26, 2018 by Michael Stover

With only a week left in November and 2018 coming to an end, we all must understand that the rap game doesn’t stop. This month has already been insane in terms of releases and the amount of music & art there is for us to soak up. One of the artists entering the fray is Baltimore’s Mack Scott. Last week I introduced you guys to the Maryland standout through his album “Summer Was Crazy”. Now let’s jump in and see what its about.

This is a summer album, there’s no getting around that and with that comes really my only gripe with the record. Had this dropped during the summer or towards the end of Fall, I can’t imagine this not catching some fire. However with all that said, I think there’s another way to look at this project too. I’ve mentioned this with some other projects that evoke the same vibe, but with winter being so harsh and cold, we need some heat to warm us up, whether in the club or in the whip. That’s where Mack Scott comes in with “Summer Was Crazy”.

I think it’s easy to box in albums as having the “summer vibe”. Mack Scott takes this deeper though by capturing multiple moods of summer. We get old school sounding dance cuts like “Streetlight” whose beat reminds of listening to Sean Paul at those middle school dances. “Cascade” is a beautiful track that has that heavenly and positive mood to it that’s guaranteed to make you smile. Even the small skits throughout the half hour project solidify the summer feeling in all nine of these tracks.

Mack Scott puts on with this. Another stereotype with “summer” albums is that they all just have to bangers that showcase how much you’re making and how many women you’re with. Mack is smooth and clean as ever on this, with his distinct voice and flow he eases you into the music. “The Ride” showcases this best, with a spacey & hazy beat as the soundscape, Mack crafts a smooth tune to groove to with your partner.

“Summer Was Crazy” encompasses energy of summer and is guaranteed to uplift you as seasonal depression creeps in. Again I do think this album would’ve set ears ablaze had it been released in the summer. Mack’s ability to pull you into his world and feel the heat of the season caught me off guard and had me repeating many of these tracks. “Summer Was Crazy” is one you need to spin and pray Mack Scott gives us a part two in summer 2019.

Note: I completely forgot to mention that there isnt’ a single guest appearance on this. Mack Scott is making and carrying all the lyrics on this.
