I’m a bit familiar with MC IZ REAL so whenever he drops a track on Twitter I always check it out. From the moment I heard him the exact phrase “he sounds like a mixture of Kool Keith and MF Doom” popped into my head. It’s funny because I let two other friends hear him and they said the exact same thing. So I think it’s safe to say that if this combination sounds interesting to you, you should definitely keep reading.
“Dick Grayson” is MC IZ REAL’s new track, which he released under his moniker, Lukey Cage. It starts off with IZ REAL immediately getting busy with his signature off-kilter flow. The beat is a simple kick-snare beat with a fuzzy background and a sample that almost sounds like Goblin’s Suspiria theme song. IZ REAL’s flow has always been what attracted me to his music. I love the way he rides a beat and he definitely pulls it together on this one.
“Dick Grayson” is basically a string of non-sequiturs related to him banging out random chicks. All of this is linked together with him relating himself to various characters from Batman comics. So the track’s sample hook (a throwback to the “Holy Smokes” quotes from the classic Batman television show) fits perfectly.
He drops some great lines on this track, too. For instance: “She said everything was groovy, but then the angels started to boo me, because I caught the holy ghost and locked him in the basement with Sloth from The Goonies.” He also had a hilarious line about “y’all like cock like Alan Scott.” Only comic book nerds will get that one. These types of lyrics aren’t for everyone. If you’re looking for a track that’s easy to follow with simplistic basic lyrics, this may not be your cup of tea. But if you can dig an MC that spits stream-of-consciousness style with a flow that may, at first, seem disjointed (ala Billy Woods, Bigg Jus, etc.), then give this a try. I promise, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Check out the track here.
“Poisonous girls are everywhere. It ain’t hard to find them. Just make sure she ain’t trickin at Arkham Asylum.”
The first time I heard Iz-Real rhyme I was blown away. By everything! The beat was fresh, the production was smooth and Iz’s rhymes left me speechless! He continues to astound me with every release. I can only hope that one day I get to see him perform live. Iz-Real as Lukey Cage- his style is raw, his subject matter is fun, sexy, a tad bit kooky and goes to some darker places. His style is phenomenal and original- one of my favourite things is that you never know what’s coming next. I admit, sometimes it takes a couple listens to catch all the words and meanings but I don’t need an excuse to put Iz on repeat, he’s too dope to listen to only once. I now have a bit of Lukey Cage each and every day. Ladies love Cool Cage!
