So I’m not completely sure what MC name this guy goes by. He says “Chris Edwards” on the track, but the track, itself, says “Christian Schembor.” For the review, I’m going to go with Chris Edwards. He can hit me up if I’m wrong and maybe, just maybe, I’ll fix it.
Anyway, I listened to this a few times through before I even began to make notes on what to say about it. First things first… I like the beat. It has a nice laid back sound with some cool layers and samples used throughout. I especially like the Spanish sounding guitars that come in and out of the song. They add a nice splash of style to it.
As far as the MC goes, I can tell he has a nice flow. He seems to ride the beat well and sounds OK on it. And what I mean by “OK” is that his voice isn’t bad, but, I have a feeling that, given a full project, it might start to bother me. He sounds a bit monotone and doesn’t really exude any passion. He just sounds like he’s rapping for the sake of rapping. But, let me point out that he was only 16 at the time of this recording (17 now). For someone so young, I think he has a lot of potential to do big things. But, aside from adding some personality and charisma to his music, there are a few things he needs to work on.
A big thing he needs to work on is the mixing. The mixing on this track is not too good. The beat is so loud that it almost completely drowns out the MC. And when the guitar sample comes in, forget about it. At that point the beat is so distracting that his voice may as well not even be there. I tried turning it up to see if that made it easier to hear him, but it just made the guitar sample sound obnoxious because of its volume. What I could hear of his lyrics weren’t bad.
He’s definitely not uber lyrical, but he’s not basic to the point of me wanting to turn it off or getting bored by it. However, it was just one long verse. I feel like I need more than that to really give a solid judgment on his lyrical ability. A lot of people can write a long verse full of bars, but not many can write a cohesive song. What I did hear made me feel like the vocals were a bit all over the place not focusing on one subject. If that’s your style (MF DOOM, Kool Keith) then that’s fine, but I’m just not sure here.
Overall, it’s a bit hard for me to give a solid opinion on whether or not I like the song. It was really short, and due to the beat being so distracting, I couldn’t get a really good feel for the MC. Anyone that knows me knows that I take all things into consideration when reviewing music. I need beat, flow and lyrics. If one is missing, sometimes the other two can make up for it; sometimes they can’t. With Chris Edwards, I can’t tell if his lyrics are missing, because there weren’t enough of them. The little I did hear were just OK. They didn’t wow me and definitely didn’t piss me off. Again, for being so young I think he has a lot of room to grow, but is already on a good path. He just needs to step it up a few notches…and find a better place to mix his shit.
