And, here we go. First, BET, let loose their Top 10 Rappers of the 21st Century which should be thrown out the window. And now, MTV is issuing their Top 10 Hottest MC’s In the Game. For those of you that care, here is the criteria:
As in 2008 and2009, the list, determined by the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust, is based on an MC’s achievements right now, rather than an entire career. The criteria is based on a combination of rhyme skill, flow and how those things are implemented musically. The Brain Trust also considered buzz, impact, commercial success — sales, airplay, business ventures, Web presence, endorsements and helping to spawn other artists’ careers — and the intangible, impact: Can an artist not only contribute to the rap game but influence cultural shifts? Are they trendsetters? All of these factors contributed to deciding who is the Hottest MC in the Game.
Kicking things off this year is Ludacris.
Flame Thrower: Ludacris
2010 Rank: #10
Collection: Battle of the Sexes
Previous Rankings: N/A
Luda earned his first appearance on the list based on the strength of his last release ‘Battle of the Sexes.’ Ludacris is routinely overlooked as a dope MC. Not making 2008’s list, Ludacris expressed his disapproval on Mixtape Daily. “I’m top five, dead or alive/ And MTV, y’all must be out yo’ muthaf—in’ mind.” That didn’t work. And while ‘Battle of the Sexes’ was ok, it wasn’t even that album that pushed MTV to add Ludacris to the list. Oh, no. It took a Justin Bieber feature to get him on. Yes, ladies and gentlemen…that guy. 10 years of rapping in the game and movie appearances just isn’t good enough. But that Justin Bieber record, man on man, that was what set him over the top!
Where Luda really shined this year, though, was in his collaborations. He was featured on Justin Bieber’s smash “Baby,” which gave the teenybopper some street cred while also giving Luda a huge look at Top 40 radio. The video for “Baby” is the most viewed in the history of YouTube.
GIVE ME A BREAK! O, this is utterly ridiculous. I am glad Ludacris is finally getting a look but really doe, I find it disrespectful that the man could not even crack the top 10 based on his own merits. You read the rest of this mess here.
I am dreading #9.
The flick has been dubbed a “visual accompaniment” to Kanye’s forthcoming LP, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (which drops November 22). Right before the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, where ‘Ye debuted “Runaway,” MTV gave fans a taste of the movie with an exclusive preview during the VMA pre-show. The clip featured prancing deer, a nimble dancer and Kanye West hauling away a woman swathed in feathers from a fiery explosion.
“It’s the story of a phoenix fallen to Earth, and I make her my girlfriend, and people discriminate against her and eventually she has to burn herself alive and go back to her world,” he told New York magazine. “I’ve been feeling the idea of the phoenix. It’s been in my heart for a while. It’s maybe parallel to my career. I threw a Molotov cocktail on my career last year, in a way, and I had to come back as a better person.”
Kanye West is an artistic guy. I will enjoy seeing him take this to task. I think hip-hop needs to expand and become more creative. It will only propel the genre to another level and open plenty of opportunities. With avenues available such as YouTube and Vimeo, artists now can create these pieces of work without having to go through a lot of Hollywood BS. I’m for it. So let’s all tune in Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 at 8 PM.
After his classic CD with Bad Boy, Life Story, Black Rob has been missing from the game. Yeah he dropped his 2005 album The Black Rob Report, it just wasn’t the same. And yeah he was in jail from 2006 to 2010 but we have not seen that same 2000 Life Story Black Rob that we dig. Well, good news folks, it has been reported that Black Rob is now a member of Duck Down Music. Black Rob has a new album coming out in 2011 titled Game Tested and Street Approved.
Black Rob explains the LP is a “testimony of what I stand for and how I feel. The people have been asking for true hip hop music, and that’s what I’m giving them. I stayed away from features. I’ve been away for 4 joints, so I feel the people deserve to hear me. When I came home, I went right to work, and didn’t have time to reach out to cats. On my next project you will get that. As for producers, I have some up-and-coming cats on there. I believe in giving cats a chance. As far as named producers you may hear a joint or two from Buckwild, Self Service, Bishop, Scram Jones and Pete Rock.”
On his decision to work with Duck Down Music, Black Rob reveals that he “always respected their movement and also been a fan of their music. If I’m going independent why not go with a team I respect, and they have always had a true family setting & environment.”
I wonder if Black Rob will show up tonight at The Duck Down 15th Year Anniversary tonight in Atlanta. I’m sure the fans would appreciate a guest appearance from dude.
