Virginia continues to pull all the stops this year, and with OMARtheGroove’s “Before It Gets Better” their tirade continues. As the harshness of winter enters the U.S “Before It Gets Better” touches on the brutality that is the end of relationships.
Covering the multiple stages of relationships and the grief that comes with losing them, OMARtheGroove has a number of tricks and styles up his sleeve. The majority of the production is handled by MAITRO, who brings a combination of different sounds and vibes to the table. You can stream “Before It Gets Better” below, make sure to let me know what you think and to keep it locked here we’ll be interviewing OMAR later this month.
DJ Concept crafts a soulful version of the super collab between MED, Oh No, Blu & Madlib titled “The Turn Up”. He takes it back with a mellow, nostalgic filled canvass which totally fits the distinct styles of all the emcees involved. This remix is set to be featured on third instalment of Audiomack’s Basement Bangers playlist, set to drop on Monday, December 11th—stay tuned!
“The Turn UP” is off MED, Blu & Madlib’s follow-up EP to their 2015 released Bad Neighbor LP.
The end of 2017 is spawning more music than I personally anticipated, with Big Sean & Metro Boomin releasing today, there are a couple others who are releasing stellar projects today too. Chicago emcee Peter Sayke has released his album “Heaven Can Wait”.
For this project he’s used one of my favorite formulas in grabbing one producer in Indiana producer Longevity to set the tone for the entire project. Drenched in boom bap, if you’re a fan of underground hip-hop this is a must grab. Sayke and Longevity show the chemistry and bring a pretty star studded lineup to the table including guest features from Stik Figa, Blueprint, Ill Brown and more. Check out the stream below and let me know what you think in the comments below. Keep it locked here because I’ll be reviewing the project and interviewing Sayke soon.
Illect Recordings has been one of my favorite labels since I was first introduced to hip-hop. Through the years they’ve been able to build and create a roster of artists to push hip-hop in a positive direction. The latest in this endeavor is that of Armond Wakeup who’s here with his latest EP “40 Days” and Illect was nice enough to slide us an advance stream of the project.
The project produced entirely by Wes Pendleton has Armond packing a lot of content in these five tracks. He calls us to reflect while he himself reflects on what’s gotten him here. The production has something of a minimalistic feel to it, giving Armond’s vocals to star centerstage here. From the introduction “The Mourning” to the closer “The Worth” “40 Days” is one worth popping in for your reflection and meditation. Check it out below and let me know what you think, “40 Days” officially releases tomorrow December 8th.
Cambridge, MA’s own N.B.S. (Natural Born Spitters) provide a stark look at the harsh realities of street life in their new video for “The Evils,” which is produced by acclaimed Swiss producer DJ Tray (Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Tragedy Khadafi), and serves as the debut single off their SwissVets2 LP, which is set to drop early ’18.
The JakeBeatz Films production is guided by the raw rhymes of Nux and Flash, two emcees who take pride in their ability to blend personal and political topics in their verses. While you can hear those qualities throughout their discography, they’re particularly evident on “The Evils.” That goes for its video, as well, because it displays both the rappers’ passion for their craft.
In addition to seeing the two recording in the booth, there’s flashes of footage that serves to follow the narratives within Nux and Flash’s rhymes. This includes the “money and guns, drugs and women”—aka “The Evils”—and the sad story of one young man whose life fell apart at the hands of the track’s namesake.
Check out the visuals, and if you’d like to support, head over to the digital outlet of your choice to support the single, which is now available via Empire Music / PW Records / Big Bang Records. Keep your eyes and ears open for more leaks and visuals taken from SwissVets2!

Cleveland emcee Y.G.K has been invovled in hip-hop from a young age and that shows in his latest project “State of Mind”. Y.G.K. has come through with a last minute surprise to close out 2018. In “State of Mind” Y.G.K speaks from the heart and speaks from his personal experiences. There’s no real mincing of words across this 14 track project from the Ohio native. Moreover Y.G.K kept it in house with Soledad Brother who’s created some heaters with drums that will snap your back in half.
Here’s what Y.G.K had to say about “State of Mind” I made this album with the intention of showing people that its never about how you start or where people see you at currently, but its the belief in yourself that conquers anything in your way.
Over the last couple weeks I’ve been introducing you to Canadian hip-hop artist Soulfistikato with his singles “Holding Fire” & “Give Back”. Today I have the full EP from Soulfistikato called “The Head Nod”.
Instrumental projects can sometimes be a hard sell because if one isn’t into a particular sound that destroys the whole project for the listener. However here on “The Head Nod” the EP is a journey, every song is a journey. Each track has a variety of influences, Soulfistikato uses the foundation of sounds in the beginning of each instrumental and builds upon it, so that by the end of the track you’re listening to an epic sculpture that you were able to witness being built. Anyway check out “The Head Nod” below and get ready as we’ll be interviewing Soulfistikato soon.
Another one of my initiatives going into next year is to bring you more hip-hop from places outside the U.S. Today I have UK artist Ichokas who is getting set to release his EP “Dreams In Darkness” later this month.
Icho has been emceeing for a while but this is the first project we’re getting from him and based on his first single “Lost” this EP is bound to be full of passion and emotion. “Lost” is born from the pain and mistakes made on this journey called life. Produced by Ichokas himself, check out “Lost” below and get ready for “Dreams In Darkness” which is slated to release December 15th.
